Drop off bulky waste at no cost

The City of Wasco Code Compliance Departmenbt is hosting a Spring Community Clean-Up on Saturday, April 22, and they need your help. The Wasco Public Works Department, American Refuse, Alianza, local groups and businesses are partnering up to beautify Wasco.

Sergio Gonzalez, code compliance officer, said they have hosted these events for over ten years.

"It's a great way to keep bulky items from the alleys and deters illegal dumping. It gives the community an excellent way to dispose of their large waste without having to travel out of town."

"It saves them a trip to the dump. Certain items have a fee, so they can avoid that fee by dumping through us."

He said illegal dumping in Wasco is a problem.

"It is a priority for our department."

At the event, one can bring in old furniture, home appliances, TV's, mattresses, e-waste and water heaters.

Trash, commercial waste, construction or remodeling scraps, hazardous materials and green waste cannot be accepted.

For those who have no way to transport the waste, the city has a pick-up service where they will go to your residence.

Code Compliance holds community clean-ups twice a year.

These events are always busy, and last time there were 68 drop-offs and 45 pick-ups of large amounts of waste collected.

Volunteers play a big role in the clean-up, and more are needed.

"I will need adult chaperones to guide students on the alley clean-ups."

The clean-up will occur from 9 am to 12 pm at Barker Park. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, call (661) 758-7213.
