Serving the community since 1970

A small donation goes a long way

The Houchin Community Blood Bank bus will return to Wasco on Friday, April 28. The Wasco Knights of Columbus is sponsoring the event.

HCBB visits the city every eight weeks, and there is always a good turnout.

Last time they collected 22 units, which equates to 66 lives saved. They also brought in a handful of first-time donors, meaning the donor base in Wasco is growing.

Joe Acevedo, a member of the Knights of Columbus, said they have held these events off and on for 18 years.

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal organization for Catholic men with a mission to serve those in need in Wasco. It has an almost 100-year legacy of playing a vital role in the city.

There is a nationwide shortage of blood donations, and with the pandemic, there has been an even greater need.

"We are looking for healthy donors that can give back to help our community," Acevedo said.

The impact of a donation is significant, as three lives are saved each time.

HCBB is located in Bakersfield, and most of the donations stay local.

Donating involves a simple questionnaire and a brief health screen to confirm one is eligible. A person can give as young as 16 with parental consent. There is no cutoff age.

The staff is also bilingual to assist non-English speakers, and there is a team of phlebotomists, screeners, a registrar and a bus driver for the convenience of donors.

"Those that come to donate are heroes and are making a difference helping to save lives."

The blood drive will be held at the St. John the Evangelist Parish Catholic Church at 9th Street and Griffith Avenue from 2 pm to 6 pm. To register, visit http://www.hcbb.com or call 661-323-4222 for more information.
