Play ball!

Reserves are coming to town

Baseball season just got a little more exciting for Wasco and the surrounding areas.

The Pecos League recently announced that a new professional team would be formed to play in Wasco for the upcoming spring and summer.

The Wasco Reserves, donning Columbia blue and maroon uniforms, will play at the Wasco Ballpark, 1281 Poplar Ave. They have 64 games on the 2019 season schedule that begins May 30 and runs through July.

The Pecos League, not affiliated with Major or Minor League Baseball, is an independent baseball league that operates in cities throughout the Southwest. The Wasco Reserves will join the Pacific Division with the Monterey Amberjacks, California City Whiptails, High Dessert Yardbirds, Tucson Saquaros and Bakersfield Train Robbers. "Wasco is the only expansion team this year," said Pecos League Director Andrew Dunn. "They have replaced our traveling team."

The Pecos League website indicates that all teams carry a 22-man roster and the players are 25 years old and younger.

Dunn is very excited about coming to Wasco, and mentioned a Wasco team was in the works several years ago. The Train Robbers, originally from Topeka, Kansas, was relocated to Bakersfield when the Blaze left town. Thoughts of a Wasco team became a reality in 2018 after several years of debating the locations for a new team.

The Reserves' new field manager, Bill Moore, is working to put the team together. "I've already been scouting around looking for players for the Reserves," said Moore. "I have six to eight players, maybe ten, who already played with me last season."

Moore is a lifelong baseball enthusiast and longstanding manager in the Pecos League. He managed the Bakersfield Train Robbers in 2017. "This year will be my 47th year coaching baseball," said Moore. "I spend every evening at the ballpark."

Moore also indicated that he is looking for places for players to stay. "The team counts on host families to house the players," Moore said. "This would enable families with a young son to have a professional ballplayer stay with them during the season. It could be a rewarding experience for everyone."

Moore hopes spring training will start around May 15, a couple weeks in advance of their first game in Monterey against the Amberjacks. The Reserves' first home game will be June 1 against neighboring Bakersfield Train Robbers.
