Santa Claus, accompanied by Mrs. Claus, flew in from the North Pole to visit the Minter Field Air Museum on Saturday. "They arrived in an airplane, taxied right up to the museum's hangar, got out and greeted all the children and adults there," Minter Field Air Museum Chairman Ronald Pierce said.
Hundreds of children from across Kern County had the chance to share their Christmas wishes with Santa. Each child also got to choose a free stuffed animal, donated by the Ming Avenue PetSmart. Members of the Kern County Nurse's Honor Guard helped distribute the toys. Children could also explore Shafter's first fire truck, as well as several jeeps and airplanes on display.
The museum was open in observance of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, honoring the events of Dec. 7, 1941. Many visitors explored the historical exhibits, with one highlight being Santa sitting on an aircraft tug that had been on Wheeler Field in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor attack. "It is a Pearl Harbor survivor," Pierce noted. "The museum appreciates all the volunteers who helped make this Santa Claus Fly-In a great success. Merry Christmas."
