Serving the community since 1970
Líderes Campesinas is a nonprofit organization founded in 1988 by farmworker women in California's Coachella Valley. "Our mission is to strengthen the leadership of farmworker women and girls so they can serve as a bridge for economic, political, and social change and ensure their human rights," Yesenia Acosta of Líderes Campesinas Kern Norte explained. On Friday, Dec. 20, they will host CampesinXmas at the Wasco Woman's Club, featuring a traditional Mexican posada, a 2024 post-election community forum, toy distribution, a gift card raffle and food sponsored by Carnitas El Jesse.
Acosta explained that they chose to organize a posada with food and music because these traditions are deeply rooted in Mexican culture, offering a way for communities to come together, share the Christmas spirit and reflect on themes of unity, faith and generosity.
The first 100 families to attend will receive toys. Other organizations, including Building Healthy Communities of Kern, CHIRLA and the Agricultural Labor Relations Board, will also be present, offering resources and support.
Sponsors include Prime Insurance Agency, Building Healthy Communities, Delano Mayor Joe L. Alindajao and Kern Family Health Care.
"I thank the committee for all their hard work and love; this wouldn't be possible without them. And thank you to our executive director of Líderes Campesinas, Suget López, who will participate."
The event will occur from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Wasco Woman's Club, 1601 7th St. "On behalf of all of us at Líderes Campesinas Kern Norte, I extend a heartfelt invitation to all of you to join us for this special posada."
