Shafter stuffs a bus to support youth

The Shafter Lions Club, along with their partners and sponsors, held a Stuff the Bus event on Saturday, collecting a busload of school supplies for the students of Shafter. Gilbert Alvarado of the Shafter Lions Club said that it was thanks to the support of the entire community that the event was a success.

In addition to the Shafter Lions Club, the Shafter Family Resource Center and Kern County Child Support Services, as well as Acelerados Off Road, were on hand to help with the event. Members of the Shafter Police Department also helped out.

All of the items donated will be distributed to the students who attend Richland schools.

As in years past, the event also was attended by representatives of local government. A representative of Assemblymember Jasmeet Bains was there to support the event. The drive was held in the parking lot of the Dollar General Store on Lerdo Highway.

The event helps students who don't have necessary supplies to prepare for the school year. "These events are really cool. It especially helps out those of us who may need a little help when it comes to all of the necessary things that the kids need for school, like backpacks, paper, pencils, stuff that some people just take for granted," said Myra Jenhold, who stopped by the event and was so happy to see so many people there. "It really makes you believe that there are some great people in our community."
