The Wasco Recreation and Parks District will host 'The Red, White & Boom Fireworks Festival' on Saturday, June 29. This event will bring families and friends together to celebrate the country's independence at Barker Park, enjoying food, vendors, activities, music and a substantial fireworks show.
The festival kicks off at 6 p.m. with a flag ceremony, a patriotic tribute led by Boy Scouts Troop 950, and a bike parade in partnership with Wasco Toys for Tigers. Residents can join in on this tradition by decorating their bikes, trikes, strollers, wagons or golf carts. Participants check in at the Wasco Recreation and Parks booth at 6 p.m. on the day of the event.
Also, at 6 p.m., the 3rd Annual Car Show & Shine, a tribute to Danny Rueda, will take place. The event is open to all makes and models of cars, trucks and motorcycles. Setup begins at 5 p.m. It is a nonjudge vehicle show.
"It's a "park-and-sit" car show with no awards, just a prize for a lucky winner that is raffled for those participating," WRPD Manager Chris Serna said. "It will be a place to hang out, talk cars, and tell stories to one another, participate in the events, hear some great music, eat some great food from the vendors in the park and have a great view of the fireworks show."
At 7 p.m., there will be a watermelon eating contest, which will test the speed of eating a watermelon hands-free. Winners will receive a prize, and is open to all ages. Pick up an entry form at the DJ booth by 6:30 p.m. and complete a waiver in order to participate.
From 7 to 8:45 p.m., residents can have fun at the Red, White & Pool Party. "The pool party is sure to be a splash! Open to all ages, admission is free to all for a refreshing time at the pool before viewing the fireworks show," Serna said.
Finally, at 9 p.m., the fireworks show starts. "Great viewing spots can be found along Barker Park. Fireworks remind us of the beauty and wonder of life. There's nothing like watching our annual fireworks display to get your adrenaline pumping and your heart racing. The bright colors, the noise, the smell of gunpowder, it's all exhilarating and invigorating.
"The visual spectacle of fireworks ignites a collective sense of patriotism, uniting diverse individuals under a common banner and fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie."
During the festival, savor food and beverages from a diverse selection of vendors. There will also be a variety of merchants with many items. DJ S will provide music, and he will be playing all kinds of genres, for all ages.
Some event sponsors include the Wasco Rotary Club, Creative Builders, Knorr Systems and Wasco T-Shirt.
City of Wasco Animal Control will hold a free adoption event at Barker Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the same day. For more information, call 661-758-7240.
