SHS baseball opens SSL with a split

The Shafter High baseball team opened their SSL campaign with a split against Chavez High School. On Tuesday, the squad dropped an 8-2 decision to the Titans, but bounced back on Thursday and beat Chavez, 7-5.

In the victory, seven different Generals had at least one hit in the game, continuing the Generals prowess at the plate. The team is averaging over 7 runs per game this season.

Matteo Martinez had a great series, going 3-4 at the plate and scoring three runs in the win. In the loss against Chavez, Martinez still shined, going 1-3 at the plate and pitching a strong game with six strikeouts

The win upped their overall record to 9-4, Coached by John Hill and a host of assistant coaches, the Generals have been successful at the plate, but also have an outstanding fielding percentage, with Christopher Espinoza boasting .1000 at third base.

In addition to Martinez, who has a 1.94 ERA on the mound, sophomore Andy Gomez. has a 1.68 ERA pitching.

The Generals have used their speed to score runs, as well as efficient and timely hitting at the plate.

The Generals will continue their hunt for an SSL title with a series this week against the McFarland Cougars, Wednesday and Thursday at 4 p.m.
