Serving the community since 1970

Planet Dance's extravaganza returns to the stage

Since 2002, Planet Dance Studio has been a jewel in the community, with thousands of youth participating in the program over the last 21 years. Their annual recital will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Shafter High School Auditorium, and it promises to be a spectacular event.

Jacob Hernandez is the studio director. "This year, the theme is 'Icons' and [the show] will be a tribute to some of the greatest performers of all times like Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Elvis Presley, Adele and Nicki Minaj."

There will be 65 dancers ages 4 to 17 presenting 20 routines in the genres of tap, jazz, ballet and hip hop, all dressed in custom-made costumes.

"It's our 21st annual dance recital, and everyone is working hard. The show will be nothing like we've ever done before, and we have our highly anticipated opening number and our father-daughter performance."

Tickets for the performance go on sale on Monday, Oct. 23, and can be purchased at the studio, 641 F St., Monday through Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. General admission is $25 pre-sale and $30 at the door.

Over the last two decades, the studio has stayed true to its mission of instilling the art of dance in its students and surrounding communities.

"We have four highly trained instructors passionate about dancing, guiding, being a role model and teaching youth."

Hernandez said the goals for the dancers are to build confidence, develop technique, cultivate time management, learn structure and promote dedication and determination.

Enrolling in the studio requires no experience, and both boys and girls are welcome. A competitive team performs at competitions throughout the nation.

"They start competing in February 2024 and will travel to Redondo Beach, San Jose and Las Vegas. We have won every award you can mention and scholarships."
