Winners in baseball, softball honored

With the volleyball season ready to begin next week, the spring baseball and softball teams celebrated the end of the season with All Star games and awards presentations this week, crowning the champions in each division.
And there is no rest for those on the diamond, with the sign-ups for Fall Baseball and Softball beginning on July 10 and goes to Aug. 18. The cost is $70 per player, with payment plans for those who cannot afford to pay the entire amount at once.
The first place winners of the spring baseball and softball seasons were hnored. In 11U boys baseball, first place winners were the Blue Jays, which finished the season with a perfect 8-0 record. The Giants had a 7-1 record to get second place, with their only loss to the Blue Jays.
The White Sox won the championship for the 11U girls softball season with a 7-1 record. Second place in the division went to the Red Sox, with a 4-2-1 record. In the 14U boys division, it was a battle between the Diamondbacks and the Angels, with the championship coming down to the final week. The Diamondbacks won with a 7-1 record, one game ahead of the Angels, who finished the season with a 6-2 record. In the 14U girls division, the Yankees finished the season undefeated with a 7-0-1 record; the only blemish was a tie with the White Sox, who finished in second place with a record of 5-2-1.
Shafter Recreation is still taking registrations for the Shafter Striders cross country season. Signups will be accepted until Aug. 4. The team competes in several meets and invitationals across the county and valley.
July 23 is the start of the Shafter Recreation Summer Tennis Camp.
The camp teaches students the basic techniques and strokes of the game. It also concentrates on conditioning drills as well as footwork. The camp is for ages 5-13.
Shafter Recreation also has several programs for seniors. Tuesdays and Thursdays, they have chair fitness classes, getting the participants to move with exercises that keep them limber and helps with their endurance. This class runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
There is also an arts and crafts program that lets the seniors let out their creative passions. This class is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
