Shafter skies to light up on the 3rd

The city of Shafter will be holding its annual Fireworks Show this year on Monday July 3, with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and fireworks beginning at dusk. The event will be held at the Shafter Recreation baseball fields, right next to Shafter High Football stadium.

Many will be familiar with the location even from years when the event was held at the stadium, since that's where they camped out to watch the show.

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce is once again the sponsor of the event, with a number of sponsors making it free. Donations from the public are encouraged and accepted.

There also will be a variety of vendors at the event, selling food, drinks and toys, and there will also be a game area for the kids, keeping them entertained until it is time for the main event to take place as the sun sets.

The fireworks show attracts families from all over Kern County, with the event being one of only a few still held in the county. With the costs of the shows rising, and the opposition that some communities are up against when it comes to fireworks, the event has become an attraction for families as far away as McFarland, Delano and other outlying areas.
