Suspect arrested in Shafter downtown shooting

Police arrested a man into custody after he allegedly shot another man in the head outside the Shafter Starbucks Thursday morning.

At approximately 9:37 a.m., Shafter police officers responded to a call reporting a shooting in the 100 block of West Lerdo Highway. Officers already in the area heard the shots, saw a man running from the scene and detained him. Officers then found an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds to his head.

Hall Ambulance responded and transported the victim to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield for treatment. According to Assistant Police Chief Diana Barnett, the victim is expected to survive.

This Shafter Press reporter was nearby when the shots could be heard. Officers had guns drawn soon thereafter at the intersection of West Lerdo Highway and South Wall Street.

They then entered the alleyway that leads to the Starbucks, yelling at the suspect, "Get down on the ground, get down on the ground!" They then took the suspect – still unnamed by the police Thursday night – into custody.

"We are still investigating the incident so we haven't released the name of the suspect," said Barnett.

The Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Detective Jessica Fernandez at 661-746-8500.
