Serving the community since 1970

Polar Plunge event inspires call to action

The 2nd annual Great Polar Plunge Challenge is set to take place on Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. at Barker Park. It will be a fun way to kick off 2023 and jump-start new year's resolutions with a dip into an icy cold pool.

The Wasco Recreation and Parks District is organizing the event.

"We are inviting the community to take part in an exhilarating activity that will serve as an impetus to realizing your goals for 2023," Program Coordinator Juan Bernal said, "The polar plunge is a physical extension of that and a call to action."

"When participants jump in as a group, it is a show of unity and willingness to overcome any obstacle in the new year. It is a sign that someone is serious about their resolutions."

To add to the festivities, there will be hot chocolate and cookies. There also will be a warming station.

The event allows participants to show their creativity.

"Some come dressed as superheroes, others wear tutus, while some come in colorful matching outfits," Bernal said. "Bring a towel and warm clothes to change into afterward."

The event is free, and all ages are welcome. It is recommended that one have at least basic swimming skills. A lifeguard will be on duty.

Participants will be recognized with an "I Survived the Polar Plunge" medal to remind them of their symbolic act of bravery and commitment to their intentions.

Polar plunges are held around the world, and WRPD wants to give the community this unique opportunity to join in on the excitement.

This is one of many activities the WRPD holds throughout the year.

Stay tuned for youth baseball, softball and flag football with registration at the beginning of February. The fee is $55 for kids 3 to 6 and $65 for older youth ages 7 to 14.

Following that, youth soccer will pick up again in July.

To register for the polar plunge, visit the WRPD office at 1280 Poplar Ave. or online at wascoparks.recdesk.com. For more information, call 661-758-3081.
