Serving the community since 1970

Event celebrates the spirit of giving

LifeHouse Church will host a toy giveaway for needy children next week. The church expects to distribute 500 toys for boys and girls ages three to twelve.

Families will drive up and pick an age-appropriate toy for their children. It will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The church will try to give away as many gifts as they can.

Pastor Manuel Cantu is spearheading the event. He said in addition to distributing the toys; it will be a nice way to spread the mission of their church which is to give back to the community.

"We want to be a community-driven church, and serving our community is a priority."

He hopes to instill in families and children the value and message of giving and receiving during this time of year.

"Our goal is that parents also remind their kids that Christmas is not only about gifts, but also remembering the birth of Jesus Christ, which was a gift to the world," Cantu said.

It is the first time they will host the giveaway.

"We hope to make it an annual event."

The event is in collaboration with Toys for Tots, which will provide the gifts to LifeHouse. The congregation is also collecting toys.

"It is a blessing for families that can't afford to buy gifts for their children," he said.

Cantu said the best thing for him will be seeing kids and families excited about enjoying a Christmas with toys under the tree and memories to hold on to.

He added that this will allow kids to experience a Christmas like their classmates with a gift at home.

"The whole event centers on helping families that can't afford to purchase gifts for their children."

There will be about 20 volunteers on the day of the event to ensure it runs smoothly.

Cantu asked others to help in the gifting., "If there are other businesses or individuals that want to send us donations before the 18th, we would love to have them," he said.

The toy giveaway will take place from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at LifeHouse Church, 1441 7th St.
