Tigers lose to Titans, 28-20

The Wasco Tigers dropped to 1-2 in league play after a 49-8 loss to the Chavez Titans on Thursday night.

The Tigers had a very close game a couple of weeks ago with Kennedy, the league favorite, losing 28-20, but the Tigers were dominated by the Titans, who are tied for first with Kennedy.

Chavez started the game quickly, getting on the board with only five minutes gone in the game, going up 7-0. It is Wasco who is known for their fast starts, but David Manzo and his offense looked off key all night. The Tigers also were hurt by three interceptions, which stalled drives that were attempted to get the Tigers back in the game.

Chavez had a 21-0 lead at halftime when the Titans’ Israel Gonzalez scored the third of his four touchdowns of the game. Gonzalez ended the game with 152 yards rushing while the Titans’ defense held Tigers powerhouse running back Izaiah Juarez to 65 yards rushing for the game.

The Titans’ coaching staff said that they concentrated last week on working on their ball control offense, keeping the Tigers’ offense off of the field as much as possible. The strategy worked, as the Tigers’ defense was unable to make key stops as Chavez drove down to the field.

This week, the Tigers host the Tigers of Delano, newcomers to the SSL. Wasco will be looking to even their SSL record at 2-2. The junior varsity game will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday night, with the varsity kicking off at 7:30 p.m.
