ONGOING

NEW: Homecoming – Shafter High Homecoming Game Friday, Sept. 23, against Taft High. Kickoff at 5 p.m.

NEW: Homecoming – Wasco High Homecoming Game Friday, Sept. 30, against RFK High, Kickoff at 5 p.m.

Road work – Construction on East Euclid Avenue between James and Nickel streets to last to or three more weeks. City of Shafter recommends avoiding the area.

New semester: The Shafter Library & Learning Center’s fall semester is ongoing, and registration is open. Classes are Monday-Friday, 4:05-7 p.m. Classes are:

Grades 1-8: Art Through All Mediums, Art Around the World, Future Scientists, Cooking, Baking, Spanish, Keyboarding/Computer Programming, Crafts, Literacy Lab, Lego Robotics, iMath games/tutoring.

Pre-K: Pre-K (3-5 years) English, Pre-K (3-5 years) Spanish, and PreK (1-3 years) Bilingual for Toddlers.

Family classes: Family Bilingual Night and Family Art night.

Bakersfield College courses and certificate programs will continue to be offered; register online at their website.

Cooling off – Cooling center in Shafter at the Walker Senior Center on 505 Sunset Ave. Opens 1-8 p.m. For questions, call Kern County Aging & Adult Services at 800-510-2020.

Bookkeeping classes – Free Bookkeeping Training Program at MAOF, Mexican American Opportunity Foundation. 2130 Chester Ave., Suite 200, Bakersfield. Call 661-336-6821. Related occupations include accounts payable/accounts receivable clerks and payroll clerks. Entry requirements: At least 18 years of age, completed reading and math assessment, high school diploma or GED.

Covid tests – All residential households can order four free at-home covid-19 tests. Visit covidtests.gov

MONDAY

Richland School Board – Meetings are held the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at Golden Oak Cafeteria, 195 S. Wall St.

Shafter City Council – Meetings are held at City Hall on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m.

TUESDAY

Wasco Woman’s Club – Meetings are at the Clubhouse, 1601 7th St., on the second Tuesday of the month. There is a $15 fee for the lunch meetings.

Senior Lunch Program – Every first and third Tuesday of the month: Griffith Avenue Baptist Church, 408 Griffith St. Sack lunches for seniors will be given out at 11 a.m. Sponsored by Golden Gleaners.

WEDNESDAY

Shafter Rotary – Meeting at 7 a.m. at the Shafter Veterans Hall.

Shafter Kiwanis – Meeting Wednesdays at 12 p.m. at the Shafter Veterans Hall.

THURSDAY

Wasco High School Board – Meetings the second Thursday of the month at 1900 7th St. in Room 202, or alternatively in Library Room 1101. The agenda is on the WHS website.

Wasco Recreation and Park Board – Meetings are on the third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Hall at Barker Park.

Food distribution – Shafter Recreation and the Gleaners have food distribution every first and third Thursday of each month at the W.C. Walker Senior Center, 505 Sunset Ave.

FRIDAY

Food giveaway — The Impact Program is a weekly food giveaway provided to anyone in need, Fridays beginning at 7 a.m. first come, first served. Griffith Avenue Baptist Church, 408 Griffith St., Wasco.

Waste pickup – American Refuse sponsors a free bulky waste pick-up service on Fridays to all City of Shafter core residents. To schedule a pickup you may use the App or call (661) 758-5316

SATURDAY

Depot Museum – The Shafter Depot Museum is open Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum is at 150 Central Valley Highway.
