Golf tournament for a good cause

The 1st Annual Wasco Tiger's Baseball & Softball Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, September 24th, at the North Kern Golf Course.

Kyle Wedel, a special education teacher at Wasco High School and assistant coach for the varsity baseball team, is one of many people working together to make it happen.

The event is run by the Wasco Baseball Supporters, the varsity team's booster club. The proceeds will be used to purchase gear for the softball and baseball teams, including on and off-the-field uniform accessories and needed equipment.

"Everything we raise will go back to the players and programs," said Wedel.

All ages are welcome to participate as well as all levels of expertise.

"We are out there for a good cause to raise much-needed funds and have a great time."

It is called the four-man scramble with four people on a team. Everyone gets to shoot their shot, and then they will pick the best one.

"It's a group effort to see who can have the best score for each hole," said Wedel

There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Those that attend will get a branded Wasco polo as a thank you for donating and participating.

There will also be food, refreshments and raffles.

"It is a good way to get long-time alumni and just recent alumni all together showing their support," said Wedel.

"Wasco baseball and softball have a rich alumni history, and it will be exciting to get them out to show their tiger pride."

"It will be an opportunity to see old faces and potentially old teammates to reconnect with if they haven't seen each other in a while."

Wedel said it is their first golf tournament, and it will be special to see all the support this community is willing to give.

"It is hard to have a successful season without it," said Wedel. "The golf tournament is also a fun way to get our season started."

Local businesses are needed that would like to sponsor the event.

"There will be great advertising for them as a way to appreciate them."

Wedel encourages the community to participate.

"If you are looking for a way to help support youth student-athletes and get excited about two young talented teams, this will be a great way to get involved and show that interest."

Shotgun starts at 7:30 a.m.

The fee per individual is $125, and the registration deadline is September 10th. For more information about the event or sponsorships, email [email protected] or call (661) 487-9037.
