Serving the community since 1970

Rotary Club works to empower Wasco

Since 1946, the Wasco Rotary Club has provided service to the community through funding many city organizations and causes.

The local club aims to improve the quality of life for residents. They sponsor the VFW, Wasco High School sports, the Wasco Recreation and Parks District, Toys for Tigers, the Salvation Army, the Orange Heart Foundation and neighborhood clean-up events, to name a few.

Every year they give thousands of dollars to support community-wide efforts like scholarships for graduating high school students.

Over 46,000 clubs worldwide advocate for peace, fight disease, provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene, save mothers and children, champion education and protect the environment.

Oscar Luna is Wasco's incoming president for 2022-2023.

"I am honored and humbled to serve not only Rotary Club but provide leadership to serve our community better," Luna said recently.

His goal for his term is to expand the club's reach, bring back the focus on service and establish partnerships that help promote the vision of Rotary.

Luna is confident that the club can continue making a significant impact in Wasco.

Rosalinda Chairez is the outgoing president and served from 2021-2022.

"She led with dignity and brought us back from covid to a normal club by returning our guest speaker programs, hosting weekly in-person meetings and growing our membership," said Luna.

In her role, Chairez said she grew a lot as a professional and person and learned more about being of service to others.

She said that much work goes behind the scenes, and as president, one has to make sure it gets done.

"I really enjoyed the experience and didn't think I would like it as much as I did. I tried to do my best job for my fellow Rotarians," said Chairez.

Chairez was awarded a plaque of recognition at a meeting last week.

"That meant the world to me and showed me that I was on track leading the club in the right direction."

In her 12 months as president, she never missed a single meeting. "I was very proud of that and stayed focused, making attendance a priority. As a member, I will continue to do so," she said.

The club boasts many other loyal and dedicated members.

For example, Dr. Wolfgang Renken has been with the club for the last 25 years.

"The best part about Rotary is the camaraderie and developing close relationships over the years. I also enjoy doing good things for the youth of the community," he said.

There are many fundraisers thecClub hosts throughout the year.

"Our biggest one is our Reverse Raffle event in October. This allows us to raise important funds to move forward with our mission to promote and build a stronger Wasco," said Luna.

Wasco Rotary Club welcomes new members.

"We encourage you to learn more about our special organization and join us for an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards the betterment of our great city," said Luna. "As a member, you will feel a powerful satisfaction knowing you are helping so many in need."
