Free rides encourage public transportation

The City of Wasco will offer complimentary rides on their Dial-a-Ride bus for July and August. This special will apply to all those living within the Wasco city limits.

"This is a great benefit for residents because people do make use of Dial-A-Ride and not having to pay anything for the months of July and August is a savings for them. They get the benefit without incurring any cost," said Mayor Gilberto Reyna.

Dial-a-Ride service is back after a hiatus due to the pandemic, staff shortages and other factors.

The idea for the promotion came from Administrative Manager and City Clerk Maria O. Martinez and was approved by the City Council.

"I was motivated to help residents, especially post-covid. Kids need rides to the library, pool and other summer activities," Martinez said .

"It is an excellent way to give back to the residents. I think it was very innovative on the staff's part to use this promotion to educate the residents about this vital service and hopefully bolster ridership in the coming months," said Councilmember Alex Garcia.

The initiative comes with gas prices at record highs and the need to promote public transportation.

"On our first day, we were really busy," Martinez said .

Garcia added, "Because gas prices are so high, it will make a huge impact for families struggling to make ends meet."

The Dial-A-Ride bus serves an essential role in the community, particularly for seniors.

"They use our services a lot," Martinez said .

She pointed out that the disabled and handicapped can use the service because many cannot transport themselves because their vehicles are not equipped to do so.

Once the promotion ends, prices will remain affordable. For general adults, the fee is $1.75; for seniors, $1; and for children, 50 cents.

Martinez said the initiative will help many people, and hopefully they will continue to use the service after the promotion.

"I hope families take advantage of this offer, especially next month as students prepare to go back to school," Garcia said.

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and does not offer services on Saturdays and Sundays. To schedule a pick up, call 661-758-7222.
