Spring fling in Barker Park

The Wasco Recreation and Parks District held their 2nd annual Prima Vera in the Park. It was a lively springtime afternoon with lots of fun for the entire family.

"This was a great spring event for the community and a chance for people to get out and experience the nice weather before it gets too hot," said Program Coordinator Juan Bernal.

There was a variety of food, such as fish and chips, kettle corn, hot links, specialty baked potatoes, desserts, Latino-inspired dishes and refreshing drinks.

"The food was delicious and hit the spot," said volunteer Shawn Reynolds.

DJ Al Serna kept the mood energetic with both popular songs in English and Spanish.

"It was awesome, and the best part was dancing," said 8-year-old Alexzander Guevara.

Booths such as the City of Wasco and local businesses were on hand to share information and promote various missions.

"This was an exceptional platform for us to educate residents about water conservation," said Cesar Montes of the Wasco Water Department.

Attendees participated in interactive activities like volleyball, corn hole and bocci.

In particular, the event was intended to support local small businesses with a pop-up sale in which many different vendors sold an array of original and one-of-a-kind items.

There was a small fee for them to participate, and all of the money raised will fund the upcoming 4th of July community fireworks festival on July 2.

"It is one of the many traditions that make Wasco a delightful place to live and work," said Bernal. "We need the resources and partnerships to ensure the fireworks show lives on for generations to come."

"It was a way to get people involved and get to know us better while helping local vendors and raising money for the 4th of July event," said Mayra Medina.

The turnout was impressive, and guests enjoyed themselves.

"I think it was a wonderful day for residents to celebrate prima vera. It was well attended, and it was perfect," said Mayor Gilberto Reyna. "I would like to see more of these events."

It was a family affair and a way to get the community together.

"I brought my kids and a couple of friends. I came last year and this time around it was bigger and better. Next year, I'm looking forward to making it an annual family occasion," said Angie Aguilar.

Erica Ramirez came with her husband and daughter.

"Today, I liked spending time with them. It was special because it took place here in my hometown," said Ramirez.

There were smiles everywhere.

"I love how everybody was so friendly. That's what I love about Wasco," said vendor Brigette Bolanos. "We have a lot to offer, and this was a way to showcase that."
