Paint night helps raise money for Wasco Independence High

On Wednesday, March 23 at 6 p.m., Wasco Independence High School will host a paint night event for students, staff and families.

The community is invited to join.

"We have done this event for several years. With Covid-19, we took a break, and we are happy to resume what is always a fun occasion," art teacher Monica Adams said. "The focus of the evening will be to paint in line with the season. We will be painting beautiful almond trees in bloom."

Students and staff are involved in the planning of the event.

"It is great when our students get to bond with the staff. It leads to more of a connection and helps build relationships that carry over into their academics," Adams said.

Adams will be leading the class. She received her art degree from California at Bakersfield University and has taught for more than 13 years. Since 2016, she has been with Wasco Independence High School.

"I love teaching and love our students. It is always great to get them involved in something new. Throughout the paint night, they create unique and one-of-a-kind art. It is always a pleasure to see how they gain a sense of accomplishment," she said. "Getting them out of their comfort zone trying something other than academics helps with their self-esteem and builds confidence. I believe they appreciate the socializing aspect of the evening. This is something positive, considering with Covid-19, they missed out on that. With this event, we hope to transition them back to a sense of normalcy."

The cost to participate is $10, covering your palette, paint and the whole setup. Light refreshments will also be served.

The money raised will go towards the school's quarterly celebratory functions, where students receive an award and participate in a special lunch.

"The best part about paint night is seeing family and friends come together," Campus Supervisor and Health Clerk for WIHS Angie Benavides said. "Even if it is for a little while, it is nice to see people laughing and even meeting new friends. Our school is very family orientated, and this is an example of that camaraderie we strive to develop; it is a way to celebrate fellowship."

The school is located at 1445 Poso Drive. Those interested in learning more and buying tickets can call 661-758-7450.
