Planet Dance Studio wins competition

Planet Dance Studios's Team Galaxy recently participated in a dance competition in Redondo Beach, taking home top prizes.

Representing Wasco, they made studio history, with all 10 of their dance routines receiving the highest scoring of the competition. They were also recognized with special awards for their exceptional and entertaining performances. The competition was fierce as they went against teams from throughout the Los Angeles and Southern California region.

"There were many other great studios, but we stood out as among the best. This is a testament to their commitment and dedication," said Director Jacob Hernandez. In preparation for the competition, the team practiced every week for 15 hours of training. There were nine dancers on the team, ranging from age 8 to 11.

"All of our students are extremely committed and well rounded not only keeping up with their school work, but managing everything else academic they have going on," said Hernandez. "We teach all genders, ages 4 through 17. It is remarkable how hard these young people work."

This year Planet Dance Studio will celebrate its 20th anniversary.

"We have touched the lives and taught dance to over 700 students, instilling in them a passion for the art we cherish so much," said Hernandez.

The studio is run by Hernandez and his mother, Corine Matera. Hernandez has danced for 30 years.

"I absolutely love my choice of career and the opportunities it has given me," he said. "Our dancers keep me motivated to continue to bring my best to our students and community year after year."

Other dance instructors include Vickie Limos, Veronica Garcia, Isabella Garcia, and two assistants, Ashley Servin and Rihanna Sanchez. Together they have over 100 years of dance experience.

"All of our instructors have a passion for teaching, and they bring that positive energy to the classroom to ensure that all of our students have fun while learning not only dance but leadership skills as well," said Hernandez.

On June 18, they will host their annual Summer Gala, called Selena, after the famous Mexican singer. The event will take place at the Shafter High School auditorium, and they expect 500 -700 people.

"We are excited about this because we bring to the audience 18-20 routines in various dance categories like tap, jazz, ballet, and hip hop," said Hernandez.

They plan to celebrate their anniversary on Dec. 3 with a Christmas theme show called Sleigh Ride.

"We are really looking forward to bringing to the community of Wasco together for a joyful presentation in time to celebrate the holidays while showcasing our talented group of dancers," said Hernandez.
