The neon sign that marked Stringham's Shafter Drug Store, now at the Kern County Museum.

Dr. Mike McCoy, executive director of the Kern County Museum, will be the speaker at the Shafter Historical Society Annual Meeting on Oct. 21.

The meeting will be held at the Shafter Learning Center, 236 James St., at 7 p.m.

McCoy, who had a distinguished career as an educator, became director of the Kern County Museum in 2017. His topic will be "Liquid Fire: Preserving Iconic Neon Signs."

The museum has a significant collection of neon signs, and they not only recreate the lost skyline of Bakersfield and surrounding towns, but also tell the story of early pioneer businesses.

Among the signs on exhibit is the one from the Stringham's Shafter Drug. All are invited.
