Pop up events offer something for everyone

Two vendor popup events were held in Wasco over this past weekend, offering a variety of items for residents.

With the temperature in the low 100s, masks disappeared quickly as attendees visited booths and declared their vaccination status.

Saturday's event began promptly at 10 a.m. on F Street, across from Del Norte Bakery.

Vendor booths were set up throughout the lot with a variety of items for sale such as clothing, hair bows, metal works, food and hats to ward off the hot sun.

Owner Sarai Rodas of Sarmiz Fashion said that the shop consumes her full-time schedule and is her only source of income.

"I've been selling items for the past six months," Rodas said. Even though she grew up in San Bernardino, her family lived in Wasco for at least two years when she was in high school.

Rodas' husband is a Wasco High graduate and has a muffler repair shop in town, Ramirez Muffler Repair.

"Our best sellers are the scrunchy leggings," Rodas said. "We sold out of the white and black ones." Tik Tok made the leggings famous, she said.

On Sunday, the popup event was Hawaiian themed and leis along with palm fronds decorated several of the booths. The event was held at the El Pueblo Market parking lot.

Desiree Duenas and Candybytes organized the event. Their booth had regular and Mexican candies, some with special flavorings added, for sale.

"We had 41 vendors," Duenas said. "Space rent was only $15."

Additionally, Jeff Hurley of Western Art and Fab was on hand. He was selling handmade metal artifacts, belt buckles and several other metal items.

Grannie's Garden, owned by Mary Ellen Macias, was filled with small pots of succulents that are easy to grow.

Macias had her children and grandchildren surrounding her to keep her company during the afternoon.

Her tables were filled with colorful succulents in different size pots for easy placement inside a home.
