New Generation Church donates food to seniors

Volunteers carefully packed and delivered bags of food to the residents of the Poso Place Senior Apartments this past week.

The effort was part of a community outreach initiative by New Generation Church to help the seniors during the pandemic.

The bags included a variety of groceries including sandwich bread, eggs, lunch meats, fruit, cheese and canned food.

"Each church member took two to three bags home with them and filled them with food they thought others would like," Pastor Frank Sanchez said. "Each bag was filled with probably $35 worth of food."

"Everything was donated," Sanchez added. "We had five volunteers helping to sort and pass out the bags."

The bags are part of the church's community projects they try and do each month, Sanchez said.

"In January we held a food drive, February we gave away Valentine baskets to single parents and last year we gave away 80 baskets to cancer survivors," he said. "Last September and October, we went to the Kern County Sheriff's Office and provided them with meals, and we have also given meals to first responders. We have held a free carwash and cleanup days and also have a kids' day."

New Generation Church sponsors an annual Loving Our City event that is free to everyone. The event was canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic restrictions.

This year the church is considering a Loving our City event, depending on whether the city approves it for 2021 and the county remains in the red tier.

New Generation Church is located at 1017 Central and can be reached by calling 661-758-5984.
