Santa touches down at Minter Field

Santa Claus helped bring some cheer to children this past weekend as he touched down at the Minter Field Air Museum.

Although the pandemic has been tough on children, with no in-person school memories or vacations planned, the event at Minter Field brought out smiles and laughter.

Along with Mrs. Claus and elves, the children received stuffed animals courtesy of Petsmart in Bakersfield. The group gave out over 600 of the toys.

Over 200 vehicles participated in the event. The annual event usually includes photo opportunities available with Santa, as well as refreshments. This year was a drive-thru event due to the safety restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Santa made a grand entrance as his helicopter touched down on the landing field at the airport, with the rest of his party waiting for him to join in the fun. Vehicles drove by the visitors, getting to meet St. Nick, Mrs. Claus, and collect their special present.

Ronald Pierce, of the museum, said that there was a great crowd at the airport, with the special circumstances this year.

"We thank all of the community who showed up and thanks goes out also to Petsmart for their generosity in providing us with so many toys," he said.
