Ransomware attack damage unknown

The ransomware attack on the City of Shafter’s IT system is still being investigated to see what effects the attack has had on the system.

Over the weekend of Oct. 19, it became apparent that the city’s IT system had been compromised. The IT system had been locked and frozen and the extent of the damage not known.

Although officials do not believe that any personal information had been obtained, city officials are working with federal law enforcement agencies to determine the source and extent of this unauthorized access.

City officials say that as soon as they noticed the unusual activity on some of their computers systems, they conducted an initial investigation and determined that it was in fact attacked by ransomware.

They also said if it is determined that personal information was accessible to the unauthorized individual, they will notify any people whose information was involved.

In the meantime, the city is working to get limited services up and running for city residents. They continue to serve people with their window at the back of City Hall. Go to the city’s website for any more updates on this issue.
