Shafter residents encouraged to clean up in virtual event

In August, the Kern County Public Works Department held a very successful virtual clean-up event. They are following up that event with a fall clean-up event to be held on Nov. 7.

This is a county-wide event that encourages all residents to volunteer 15 to 30 minutes of their day by cleaning up trash and debris in their neighborhoods.

"We had such a fantastic turnout with the first virtual clean-up, we wanted to hone in on this community engagement and continue this ongoing clean-up effort," said Zechariah Garcia, Kern County Public Works marketing and promotions associate.

Lynnda Martin, of American Refuse, said that American Refuse and the Shafter Youth Center will be holding a special giveaway for Shafter residents who participate in the event.

Kern County Public Works is focusing on new ways to engaging the community while still adhering to the state's COVID-19 guidelines. Though the pandemic has restricted Public Works' ability to directly engage the residents of Kern County, it hasn't diminished their desire to help the communities and their environments.

Martin said that it is easy to participate in the event, with simple instructions on how residents can make a difference in their neighborhoods.

On the day of the event, grab an old grocery bag to reuse or any disposable garbage bag available to you. Make sure to put on gloves for protection, and then pick up whatever trash you see for 15-30 minutes. This can be right in your neighborhood, a park, or wherever you see the need for clean up. Be safe while picking up the trash by watching out for traffic, sharp objects, and never wander into unsafe conditions.

Take pictures of your work. You can get creative with your cleanup efforts by making a funny pose or a funny smile. Have fun with it! Throw away your trash.
