A roundup of WHS winter sports action

The Varsity boys basketball team played at home a week ago against the Strathmore Spartans. The game was a wild one and came down to the wire. The team lead by Coach Michael Bradley and star point guard Sebastion Lopez was ready for a gruesome battle.

Both teams exchanged blows. Deep into the fourth quarter of the game, Sebastion Lopez hit a three-pointer to put the Tigers down by 1. The Tigers stayed strong on defense and got the ball back. Then, with just 11 seconds left on the clock, Andre Cordova hit the game-winning bucket – a final of 55-54.

The varsity girls basketball team headed to a tough matchup at Delano High. This was a back-and-forth game. They fell short to Delano by a final of 46-49. Senior Samantha Ochoa stated, “We just have to find our spark as a team. We have a good team and once we get into a rhythm, we will win these close matchups.”

The varsity girls soccer team was at home against league opponent RFK, for their first matchup of the season. The lady Tigers came ready to play, as they started off with a goal by Briana Castro to get an early 1-0 lead. This was followed by a goal by Michelle Zapien to take the Tigers to a 2-0 lead. They were not done yet, as Zapien got her second goal and extended that Tigers league. The game finished off with the icing-on-the-cake goal by Destinie Martinez. The girls’ soccer team dominated with a final of 4-0.

The varsity boys soccer team was at RFK on Dec. 9. The Tigers were ready for a game and were the first to strike, with a goal by Miguel Martinez gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The teams continued going back and forth with the ball. This was until Joseph Acosta put the game away by making the second goal for the Tigers. The Tigers beat the Thunderbirds, 2-0.

On Dec. 14, Tiger wrestling headed to BHS for the ruthless Rumble for the Rig tournament. At this tournament were various top-ranked wrestlers in the state. The Tigers took about 10 guys and managed to get three of them to place. The placers were Colby Clark, who finished 6th at 106 lbs., Rodrigo Lopez, who also finished 6th at 126 lbs., and Jesus Navarette, who finished 6th at 152 lbs.
