Shafter man shot dead on Highway 46

A Shafter man shot in Wasco on Monday has been identified.

Jose Ascencion Garcia, 55, was shot and killed in the 800 block of Highway 46 in Wasco around 1:52 a.m.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies from the Wasco Substation had been dispatched to the south alley of the 800 block of Highway 46 after gunshots were reported in the area. When they arrived, they found Garcia dead, apparently from gunshot wounds to his upper body

The investigation is active and ongoing.
