This ribbon cutting is sweet

Although its ribbon cutting was last week, city officials already were regular customers of a new ice cream shop in town.

Mayor Alex Garcia said he had visited Delicias Sinaloenses, at 2330 Highway 46, several times before its official grand opening May 31, and that several City Hall staffers were fans of the shop as well.

The Garcia family – no relation to the mayor – moved from Sinaloa, Mexico, to Bakersfield, and the family pooled their money to help the parents buy the ice cream store. The entire family helps out whenever needed.

Alexis Garcia says their mom is in charge of the menu since she's the best cook.

And she must be doing something right, judging by locals' reaction to the shop's treats.

Mayor Garcia said he loves the shop's food and choice of beverages. "My favorite is Diablito de Nieve de limon" -- lemon ice cream with powdered chili poured over it – he said.

City Manager Daniel Ortiz-Hernandez ordered a Mocha Boba (coffee, cream and tapioca) beverage. He liked it.

The ice cream shop offers a multitude of choices including shakes, fruit drinks, sherbet, tortas, ice cream bars and more.

"The most-popular item on the menu is Esquite en Vaso," Alexis Garcia said. The Esqicide is creamed corn in a cup with mayonnaise and a bit of chili powder to make it sweet and salty at the same time.

"I came last weekend," the mayor said. "That's when I tried the Esqicide. It was very good."

City staff enjoyed their samples so much that several stayed after the ribbon cutting was over and ordered other items off the menu.

Elizabeth Navarrete from T Mobile next door to the shop has already been in it several times.

"I like their food a lot," she said.

Wasco Rose Queen Victoria Bernal was with friend Thanya Romero and they both enjoyed sharing a large fresh strawberry dish.

Relatives of the Garcia family joined them at the ribbon cutting ceremony and also had a taste of their treats.
