Black Californians have been an important part of history within California’s rural communities. There is a traveling exhibit at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park in Earlimart exploring the history of African Americans in rural California. The exhibit will run from Saturday, June 19 to Sunday, Aug. 1 with highlights and untold stories of black farmers, ranchers and rural residents. Ruth "Marlene" Nelson was born in Yuba, Okla., on Nov. 8, 1933, to Jewell and Elsie Whitworth. Marlene had a diversified career which included positions at Stewart Insurance, co-owner of Nelson's Apparel with her late husband Bob, Fine Jewelry sales at several department stores in Bakersfield and real estate sales. The Shafter Chamber of Commerce held a free covid-19 vaccine clinic at the Shafter Veterans Hall on Saturday, June 12, helping residents get vaccinated as the state begins to reopen. The event was sponsored by the chamber, as well as Dignity Health, Kern County Public Health, the United Way of Kern, CAPK Food Bank and Adventist Health. The Shafter High Lady Generals softball team advanced to the Central Section Division V Championship game with a 5-4 win against Bakersfield Christian on Tuesday afternoon. The Wasco Reserve season has started out rocky after the team lost the first three games they played. A man has been charged by the Shafter Police Department after the fourth incident of vandalism at the Green Hotel in the last 10 months. School will begin Monday, Aug. 2, for the Wasco Union Elementary School District, Superintendent Kelly Richers clarified after he said a letter with an incorrect date went out to parents. Teachers will return July 27 for voluntary professional development and July 28 for mandatory professional development, Richers said at the district board meeting. Wasco will celebrate the Fourth of July with a fireworks show at Barker Park on Saturday, July 3 at sundown. The City Council was introduced to three new officers who have joined the Shafter Police Department. Officer Marvin Gomez, who is a Kern County Sheriff's Office veteran of over 25 years, was hired by the department in May 2021 and is his second phase of field training.
