Skip came in as a stray. He is approximately a 2-year-old male Pit Bull Terrier Mix, and has a medium apricot/beige short coat length. Skip is slightly timid with strangers, and his behavior will be monitored daily. He is great with other dogs, and he has been tested with large and small dogs. Peters Funeral Home in Arvin was one of several businesses damaged after a number of fires in the area. The funeral home at 600 Tucker St., two abandoned buildings and an antique boutique off Bear Mountain Boulevard sustained damage after four fires ripped through the area. Mayor Olivia Trujillo visited the sites of each of the fires and expressed her concern about the large number of fires in such a short period of time. The Shafter Press and Wasco Tribune will have new offices beginning Monday, Feb. 1. The paper's new address: 455 Kern Street, Ste E., Shafter, facing Central Avenue. The City of Shafter is selling the building at 406 Central Avenue where the Press is now, moving there 10 years ago after a fire destroyed its previous office near Five Points. New businesses are popping up in Shafter as the pandemic lingers in the nation. The newest addition is going to be the Countryside Car Wash, which will be located at 406 Central Ave. The city sold the property to Rick Jara, whose family owns and operates Taco Bell in town. Sports practices have begun in the Wasco Union High School District although the district will be continuing distance learning throughout the third quarter and likely through the rest of the year, Superintendent Rob Cobb said. “However, some students are returning to ‘in-person’ instructional support for distance learning beginning this week,” Cobb said. A Wasco resident was charged with multiple firearm offenses after a shooting days before. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 1700 block of Poplar Avenue on Jan. 22 at 10:30 a.m. for an unlawful discharged of a firearm. They found Daniel Malanche, 19, of Wasco, was a loaded firearm. “Malanche was arrested and booked into the Kern County Jail for various felony weapons charges, participation in a criminal street gang, an active felony warrant, and additional misdemeanor drug charge,” said Sgt. The Kern County Wasco branch library is making the most out of its limited hours, librarian Ethan Picman said. The library is currently open Monday and Tuesdays from noon to 6 p.m. “It’s important we do what we can to stay open to the public,” Picman said. “Access to the internet or the ability to print or fax can really affect someone’s livelihood.” Appointments are made at the top of each hour, for example noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The half-hour slots in between are used for sanitizing the library, Picman said. A 23-year-old Wasco resident was killed after being shot on Poplar Avenue the day after Christmas. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office reported that on Dec. 26, Vicente Hinojosa Regalado was shot in the 1500 block of Poplar Avenue. He died on the sidewalk at the scene. Regalado’s killing was ruled a homicide after cause of death was declared multiple gunshot wounds. On Monday, Jan. 25, Gov. Gavin Newsom released the state from the curfew and placed 54 counties back in the most-restrictive purple tier. Newsom also lifted his stay-at-home order. According to Newsom, the San Francisco Bay Area, San Joaquin Valley and Southern California counties are in the purple tier now. Antonio G. Reyna, 83, passed away on Jan. 16, 2021 in Bakersfield. He was born on June 13, 1937 in Gregory, Texas to Severo and Andrea Reyna. Antonio grew up in Texas and Arizona and later made his home in Wasco. He attended schools in the state of Texas. He worked for Armstrong Nurseries in Wasco as a farm labor where he worked for 40 years. Antonio enjoyed most of all attending gatherings with his family and friends. Dollie Imogene Burrow, 78, of Shafter, passed away on Jan. 18, 2021, in Bakersfield. Dollie Imogene (Whitmire) Burrow was born in Kenefic, Okla., to William E. Whitmire Sr. and Minnie M. Born on April 11, 1961 in Galveston, Texas, to Teofilo and Lupe Farias, Teofilo was one of 12 children. Growing up in Shafter, Teofilo graduated from Shafter High School in 1979.
